I have been bouncing around the idea of hiring someone with a late model RV to drive my wife and I, two dogs (60 pounds each but very clean, friendly golden retrievers, and 100% house broken), and maybe one or two of our kids (adult) to our house in Naples, Florida from Kentucky. We would drive down, find somewhere in Naples to park the RV, fly the driver back home, stay for two or three weeks, then fly the driver back to Fl when we are ready to come back and drive home. Another option would be to hire a professional driver. I know a good one, but then this just becomes an RV rental arrangement.
There are dealers in our area that offer rentals, but their rates are prohibitive because we would only be using the RV for 4 days in a 2-3 week period but paying for the use for the entire period.Has anybody ever heard of anyone offering this type of service or know how I would go about finding someone that might be interested in doing this? Thanks,Ford. Ford,If you search this forum you will find that most RV owners are not keen on renting out their units, much less chartering them (and driving) for others. I think the answer to your question is no, you are not likely to find that arrangement anywhere. If I may ask the obvious question.why would you want to do this? Just for the comfort of an RV trip down to FL? If you do not want to drive yourself, why not fly?
If you do not want to fly or drive, then I think you are looking at hiring a professional driver and a rental unit. Why not drive yourself down in a car/van/SUV, and then rent the RV in Florida only for the 4 days you'd need it? You could leave your transport vehicle parked someplace secure while you are on your RV jaunt. That seems like it would be much more reasonable as far as cost goes.As far as finding someone for your original plan, you'd just have to. Well, find someone! (duh) Maybe put an ad in your nearest Craigslist to see if there's anyone who owns an RV that would be interested in such an arrangement. There's no existing database of 'people who want to rent out their RV's for short periods of time' or anything.
Please take no offence, but this is the strangest request I have ever heard. Probably because I haven't a clue as to the motive. You own home in KY, and in Naples, FL. I can only assume you don't want the motel issues of staying with pets.
Want to watch the scenery and not drive. Question, where do you see the driver sleeping? The above scenario makes a little sense. To fly family and the dogs, down and back would be pricey. To drive yourself and family and deal with motels is a bother. To be driven and have your sleeping arrangements is beneficial.Sell the house in FL, buy a nice 40' diesel, and go anywhere!
Now that makes sense! Thanks for the replies. The reason for this arrangement is just to transport me, my family, and my dogs to and from Florida. It is very difficult flying with dogs and I barely trust airline luggage handlers with my luggage, much less me pets!!! Dogs get traumatised, lost, ill, and even die when transporting via plane. Our pets are part of the family. In addition, I have another dear friend who is battling brain cancer. He also has a place in Naples, about 100 yards from my place, and he loves going south.
Unfortunately, his doctor has banned him from flying or driving in a car for over 2 hours without getting exercise due to his condition. They needed a break after a round of chemo/radiation and decided to call a local RV dealer, rent a 32' rig, hire a driver, and head to Fl. After all costs were calculated, the trip cost them $5,000!!! I can't help but think that this could be done much more inexpensively and still be profitable for someone.I had been considering this arrangement before my friend's tragic diagnosis, but I cant imagine that there are not many others that would like to make similar arrangements. I know a LOT of working folk in KY with places in Naples. I could even envision a group of friends on a good road trip party, stopping at restaurants/bars in transit, and arrive in Naples with the proper attitude adjustment.
With the cost of things as depressed as they are, I have even considered buying a rig and hiring it out for just this purpose. Probably just another of my harebrained business ideas. Thanks again for your time and consultation.Ford.
I would think the easiest way would be to rent a RV somewhere. & if you can, drive it yourself. They really aren't bad to drive at all actually easy to drive especially on the highway.
Hiring Rv Driver
We looked at renting last summer (instead of using my parents RV which needs work) but we quickly decided against that due to the cost of renting for 3-4 weeks. We ended up buying one now it's just the matter of using it. If you plan on heading south yearly I would suggest looking at a used one.Like others have stated most people do not feel comfortable letting someone else use their RV. We have 3 dogs & 3 kids & all of them can do plenty of damage to a RV.
Rv Rental With Driver
Most porter services (RV drivers) they will lay down carpet runner from the door to the driver's seat, cover the driver's seat with plastic (like they do at auto dealers when bringing your towed in for an oil change) even put a plastic cover on the steering wheel, And possibbly wear booties to keep from scuffing up the brake and gas pedals.I mean. They do NOT use the RVIf the driver needs to visit the 'little room' He finds a rest area or truck stop. This is what is involved in driving a RIG for pay.Now. I will admit even when driving my own I normally look for a Truck stop or rest area. But that has more to do with traffic safety than use of rig's 'little room' (I may, if either the need is urgent or the weather is nasty, use the rig's. Just get the blazes out of 'Dodge' as it were (Dodge being the name of the game on the Freeway).
